Review - The Bones of Avalon

The Bones of AvalonThe Bones of Avalon by Phil Rickman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I had never heard of Phil Rickman before picking this up - for no particular reason I'm not a big Thriller or Mystery reader. However, I saw this listed in the Kindle chart, and could not resist the lure of a story about a mathematician in Tudor England on the hunt for King Arthur's bones.

From the perspective of court 'conjurer' (scientist, astrologer and mathematician) John Dee, we are taken to Glastonbury on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I of England, to hunt for the bones of King Arthur. I'm a sucker for good historical fiction based on a real person, and this was filled with real historical characters.

The first person perspective sometimes led to jumps in the plot (Dee having concluded things that we were not privvy to), which could be a frustration. Otherwise, this was a good, solid read, with plenty of twists and turns in the tale. I guessed a few of the plot twists, but that always adds to the fun for me.

3.5 out of 5.
